Stunned silence

Take a look at the bars above. Does anything more need to be said? Finding the words to describe this apology of a movie is difficult. To say that sitting through Dhoom Dhadakka was a yawn from start to finish may be too kind a statement to describe Shashi Ranjan’s latest directorial venture.

Ranjan managed an ensemble cast with actors like Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, Gulshan Grover, Jackie Shroff and some new kids on the block like Sammir Dattani (still a new kid after five films) and Zak, the winner of a Pakistani talent hunt. The arm candies includes one TV star Shama Sikandar and long-forgotten (but still, surprisingly, desperate) actress Aarti Chhabria.

Dhoom Dhadakka tries to create laughter out of cliches and is not in the least bit funny. We have seen and heard the dialogue, plot and characters no less than a hundred times before — and each time we have cribbed. It is the same old story about dons and bhais who have their annual ‘Asian Bhai Meet’ in Bangkok where they discuss the falling ‘sen sex’, with India going for a ‘full toss’ in terms of business.

To counter their losses, bhai Furshat Lala (Gulshan Grover) is given total control of Alibaug where he plans to open a casino. His opponent is Mungi Lal (Anupam Kher), who loses out as he is childless and has no young blood in the family to carry forward the job. But Anupam insists that he has a ‘waris’ (heir) and implores that he be given a month to bring him to the Godfather Jackie Shroff.

The stage is thus set for four fakes to try to pass themselves off as Anupam’s long lost nephew and niece. That is pretty much where the story ends. By the time the credits role, every actor is seen making a fool of themselves.

Let this one pass.
