Review :

No logic, no magic

Where logic ends, magic begins — is what the hero Shekhar (Nakuul Mehta) believes. But director Anil Devgan has done away with any kind of logic in the film and as for magic it never really happens.

The story is a strange concoction. From Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (train scenes) to Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (even the names of the protagonists are Shekhar and Sanjana) to bits and pieces of Jab We Met (they miss the train half way and have to take a cab!) and a whole lot of other films, the whole of Haal-e-Dil seems vaguely familiar.

A girl-meets-boy story is quite logical, but what if a boy (Nakuul) finds the name Sanjana on the train’s list, and then looks at a random girl on the platform and decides she is Sanjana, and hey presto!, she turns out to be Sanjana (Amita) — a bespectacled girl who hides behind a book a la Sanjana of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge!

Well, Shekhar tags along with Sanjana in an effort to get her. Instead, he gets on our nerves. All this while no one knows why these two have boarded the train or where they are headed. After about 110 minutes, when the journey finally comes to an end you realise that while you are still in the dark Shekhar has somehow come to know all about Sanjana’s past, her late boyfriend and all. And then comes the cliché of a seven-day-long famished wait outside the window in biting cold until the girl comes running out with a blanket and ends up in his arms.

Thankfully for debutant Adhyayan Suman (Shekhar Suman’s son) he appears only in flashback. Adhyayan has good screen presence and has the potential to be a hero. This is also the first film of Amita Pathak, producer Mangat’s daughter, whose stay in the industry needs a far better magician. As for debutant Nakuul Mehta, the only outsider, this model-turned-actor comes off as over-enthusiastic and less impressive despite being the main focus of the film.

To add value, The Family gets together as well. Ajay Devgan (the director’s brother) and wife Kajol groove in one of the songs, while mom-in-law Tanuja just walks past and only talks to the plants. Kya family hai!
