Quite watchable
No show, ma’m,” is what we were told on the way to catch the first-day-first-show of Summer 2007. No show, no review. But thankfully, a few minutes later, 89 Cinemas had about 10 people turning up. Phew!
The film, however, deserved more than this choking start. It may not have big-draw names, but what begins as a frivolous story of five young medical students, leads to much bigger and serious issues being explored.
Five rich students study in a private medical college, with enough money to spend and waste. Sikander, Yuvika, Arjan and Alekh think it’s cool to be conceited, and see no reason to change their carefree attitude towards life. Gul, though a bit different, loves her friends so much that she is willing to stick by them through everything.
When Sikander’s ego gets them involved in serious college politics, they all decide to turn their backs on it and escape. Their only way out at this point is to take a village posting for a month as a part of their training.
In the village, however, they get drawn into far more murky politics, involving far more weighty issues — poverty, debt-related suicides, money lender’s oppression. The more they try to escape the harsh realities they are suddenly confronted with, the more they get entangled in them.
They are introduced to the local doc Ashutosh Rana and Sachin Khedekar, a do-gooder, who, even in the face of life-threats, go all out to save the villagers. That is when the young doctors, one by one, really get sucked into the problems around them.
The second half of the film is action packed: there is murder, rape, bloodshed and violence. With strains of Rang De Basanti, this film may lack star value, great music or the hype that the Aamir Khan film had, but on the plus-side it also lacks the melodramatic ending. Summer 2007 also flaunts some great performances by Ashutosh Rana, Prroshant Narayannan and Vikram Gokhale. The five protagonists do their due.
Director Suhail Tatari touches serious issues without compromising on the commerce. Though there are loose ends, some holes in the plot and some scenes seem too didactic, one can at least sit through this one.
