All heroes are not equally good
When you are a rich brat with loads of money to burn and your only worry in life is girls, then you can burn some more and become a film student. That’s easier than mainstream education you guess. So Sohail Khan, aka ‘Saand’, and Vatsal Seth, aka ‘Nawabsaab’, are film students. But they are denied their certificates until they submit their graduation film.
Who needs a certificate one might say, but these two come up with an idea. Going against the flow they decide to make a documentary on ‘Why not to join the army’. To their help comes a war journo, Mohnish Behl, who has three letters from three defence officials. All three were killed before the letters could reach their destinations . Three years have passed since their death and Mohnish wants Sohail and Vatsal to deliver them to the respective families so that they get enough material for their film.
Samir Karnik’s Heroes is an ode to those men who risk their lives at the border and their proud families. It’s also for those guys who do not think it’s a big deal.
The film begins on a sombre note, as the three men, Salman, Bobby and Dino, speak their hearts out to journo Mohnish, just before they go off to war. So Sohail-Vatsal, armed with their camera and a bike, embark on the journey to trace their families.
The film has three episodes on the three families. The Preity-Salman episode is the best and Preity is outstanding. This episode of a bereaved but strong wife who takes care of the whole family and raises a son is touching. More so because of the brilliant performance by the child.
The worst is the Sunny-Bobby episode, though Bobby Deol is quite endearing. But why is Sunny always so over-the-top? Yes, he’s an airforce officer who’s lost his legs in combat and his brother Bobby in war. He is now on a wheelchair and is somewhat eccentric. But what do you say to a man who fights a dozen men lying down on the floor and every time he thumps his fist on the ground the tiles break and the floor has holes? That’s more like a demon than a defence guy.
Then comes the episode with Mithun, who’s angry with his son — for dying. The pain of it is evident and Dino looks cool as the army man in flashback. Mithun does his bit as a doctor who couldn’t take the loss of his son too well. But by then Sohail-Vatsal have learnt their lesson and they take it on themselves to help the doctor come to terms with his sorrow. They achieve it somehow but Karnik does a slipshod job here. The episode is not very convincing though the performances, especially of the mother, is quite touching.
Sohail remains the buffoon all through until there is a sea change in him and he begins to shed oceans of tears. Vatsal is better when it comes to emoting serious scenes.
The end isn’t thought out well. The two in a bid to do something meaningful open some kind of a school and look funny in grey hair. But what happened to their life after the documentary? Most important, what happened to their hot girlfriends — Riya Sen and Amrita Arora? Doesn’t matter really. What you do get to know is Salman-Preity’s son grows up to become another Salman Khan who’s also joined the army.
Heroes is good in parts and can be watched if you can’t get tickets for the other movies at the plex .
