Wedding copy, no stars
Ek Vivaah...Aisa Bhi can make your tears flow — if you are one of those who have cried buckets watching Hum Aap Ke Hain Koun..!, Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Saath-Saath Hain and Vivah. Kaushik Ghatak makes a true copy of the age-old Rajshri formula, though in doing so he makes his film look dated.
We have a model family with everything so lovey-dovey that you will cringe in your seats. The house is huge with a tulsi ki angan and a song dedicated to it.You have Chandni (Ishaa Koppikar) playing the quintessential “strong” woman. You have an ever-smiling father in Alok Nath. A friend Vallabh Vyas, who is always there. And a perfectly charming guy, Sonu Sood.
Ishaa is a topper and everyone loves her. She sacrifices her life and love to bring up her kid brother and sister after the sudden demise of their father on the day of her sagai.
Ishaa is also a talented singer who goes on to win some national singing competition. She wins the competition along with Prem (Sonu Sood), who falls in love with her. But she sacrifices her singing career and declares in addition that she can’t marry since she has to take care of her siblings, though in this day and age so many women are doing both, while helping out the family.
Anyway Prem charmingly agrees to wait. And he waits for 12 long years! The ups and downs in Chandni’s life continues with Prem still waiting. Which means many more sob scenes followed by at least 10 songs.
Ishaa Koppikar looks good in those out-of-fashion salwars and lehngas and plays her part right. If you are not sentimental about Prem not being Salman, Sonu does a good job playing the typical sweet and over-friendly character. The rest of the cast fits the unreal set-up too.
What we can say in support of Ghatak’s debut venture is that he is able to replicate the exact emotion and feeling that goes into such films. But this copy doesn’t have the stars. The songs don’t stay with you, though there are a couple of good tunes. But still you can give it a try!
