My Ajooba, Your Aag

Clouds cover the skies. He frowns. The ground parts. He frowns. Desert storms blow. He frowns. Petals float in the air. He frowns.

Meet Drona the superhero whose only power is, you got it, to frown. Give him a sexy bodyguard or a maniacal villain or a maudlin mother… he will frown. Give him a sweat shirt or a sherwani, he will frown. Give him a Ferrari or a horse, he will frown.

Childhood buddies making a home video on handycam is okay but when you spend countless crores on juvenile junk, Mr Bachchan and Mr Behl become seriously accountable. After three years of shooting and re-shooting, wrapping every frame with the choicest visual effects, what have they ended up doing? Abhishek has given Goldie his Aag and Goldie has given Abhishek his Ajooba.

And what an ajooba Drona is! Goldie hasn’t spared any mythological myth or any modern-day movie to put together the 140-minute debacle. It starts off like Harry Potter, flashes back like Batman Begins, goes into Krishna-Kangsha territory and puts in everything from Zanjeer to Kill Bill in between. In the end, it’s a cliched cross-cultural hotchpotch crying out to be a comic-book classic but turning out to be a colossal catastrophe.

Watching Abhishek and Priyanka fight Death Eaters-like baddies in all their ethnic finery — he in a white zardosi sherwani, she in a red satin wraparound —you wonder what they are doing in the middle of the desert when they should have perhaps been more at home on the ramp. He may wield a Hattori Hanzo sword and she may spin a Gogo Yubari ball, but Chhota B and Piggychops would never put a frame of Drona in their show reels. Not for a moment looking the fighters they are supposed to be, the Bluffmaster! pair has more chemistry in the Dostana teasers than in the entire duration of Drona.

But the greatest eyesore is Jaya Bachchan. Credited as a special appearance, she manages to press the pause button in what is anyway a super-slow state of affairs. As the mother who gets to see her son after a couple of decades, she goes ham and tongs at the audience (she would sweep the Ham of the Year Awards). No wonder she is turned into stone — Ramayana’s Ahalya? — after a couple of reels of unwatchable rona-dhona.

The only man in the middle of all the mindless mayhem who demands to be seen is, of course, Kay Kay Menon. Kay Kay makes Riz Raizada a new face of evil despite poor lines and done-to-death situations. His appearance scene may be inspired from The Prestige but it is the only time you do give a damn about what’s happening up there. His other two-three solo scenes, where Kay Kay plays the Two Face puppeteer, only highlights the mediocrity around him.

The visual effects are too in your face even though a couple of sequences — the churning of the sands and the melting of the stones — individually look fantastic. The cinematography by Sameer Arya is good but in an effects-laden film you are never sure how much has actually been shot. The songs are a drag but the background music, also by Dhruv Ghanekar, is the best thing about the film.

Drona was invoked to stop shrishti ka sarvanash. But it can only spell sarvanash for producer Shrishti Arya. As for Goldie Behl, he might have just managed to shut father Ramesh Behl’s prestigious Rose Movies down. It’s simple Goldie: roses are red and violets are blue. Not the other way round.

Not sure why everyone is dogging this movie. I thought it was a great movie, after all Iron Man and other fantasy flicks of its sort have been doing so well.

I give Drona a two thumbs up!
